Kevin first became interested in photography around the age of 13. At this time he purchased a home darkroom kit on clearance when the old "Shoprite" chain went out of business. Until he could afford his own 35mm SLR (a Canon AT1 - which he still owns and uses today) he shot with his parents old 35mm compacts with folding bellows lenses. For the first two years he did not own a light meter and used either the data-guides included with the film or an exposure chart found in an old Time/Life Photographers Handbook. Until he bought the Canon with the built in light-meter he never had a picture where the exposure did not work the way he wanted it to.

Since buying his first camera Kevin has accumulated a few more and works in both 35mm and 645. Last year he was given a Canon Sureshot A1 (the underwater camera) for his birthday and this camera receives extensive use both winter (above the water!) and summer (around and in the water). He just wishes they made it with a zoom lense.

For several years he has basically taken only snapshots, but with his recent retirement from the Air Force he intends to concentrate on photography and canoeing. Basically self-taught Kevin is about to start a formal photography course. Having looked at where digital photography is today (today is fleeting - the technology changes constantly) he will be entering the digital word via a film/slide scanner. Not only will this allow recent photos to be processed in the "digital darkroom" but it will allow his entire archive of images to gain new life with today's (and tomorrows) technology. After an extensive look at the current state of digital black and white versus film and chemical - he will be setting up the old enlarger and trays.

Digital is good and getting better - but it is just not there yet! Kevin's favourite quote regarding photography: "film is cheap, memories are priceless - when in doubt - Take the shot!" Kevin's second favourite quote: "Photography may be an art - but it should be fun!"
